Project based Learning in the primary grades
Projects are a wonderful way to enrich student learning and to encourage authenticity in student work. During the primary grades is a time of tremendous growth in academic areas and in social emotional learning. With that in mind, projects are designed to help students develop their ability to:
- use the elements of critique to improve their work
- wonder about the world around them
- share ideas and actively listen to others
- work collaboratively with partners/small groups
- build their independence and problem-solving skills
- grow socially and emotionally
- understand that they are part of a community and that communities have norms and expectations
- understand that each member of a community is valued and adds something to the community
- learn to take perspectives
- take risks and learn from mistakes
- meet failure with perseverance
